SLACKFEST III setlist + reviewSlackfest III Keep It Simple Encore: Encore II: * with Ben Lewis (Pietasters) on trumpet Slackfest III was an excellent, energetic Slackers show. The band was clearly psyched about headlining Irving Plaza, and their enthusiasm rubbed off on the crowd. The biggest highlight for me was Don't You Want a Man, which happens to be my favorite song on the new album, and my favorite all time political scorned-lover song. Just a really different and energetic track. (Also, I greatly prefer Ara's drums in the live version to Glen Hackett's arrangement on the studio version.) Couldn't tell if the crowd overall agreed with me. It's amazing that Married Girl and Pedophilia are STILL the tracks that get the audience most excited. Those songs are over ten years old people! The new songs are better, in my opinion! But to the Slackers credit, they did a good job of mixing up the old favorites with many newer tracks. 7 songs from the new album were played, as well as some rarer older tracks, like Manuel and Rude & Reckless. (Still no love for Close My Eyes, except for Old Dog. I'd love to hear Axes, Bin Waitin', Don't Wanna Go, Who Knows, or Close My Eyes - any of the really groovy reggae tracks from that album - make in back into the rotation. But that's just me). The other highlights for me were No Love, featuring some great horn solos, and a full version of Rude & Reckless, which was slow, groovy, and amazing. Also, was it just me, or did Agent Jay (and Marcus) start to play the chords to Sun is Shining in the middle of Work Song? Did anyone else catch that? Overall, a really great time (except for the $7 cans of beer!). Drove up from Philly for the show- totally worth it. Can't wait for the boat show!
