Vic & Paul Weller

I've screened the new documentary a few times now and really like the interview segments and I was wondering about some of the early influences comments. Vic mentions The Specials and Madness going back to the pre-Slackers days and also Paul Weller on two occasions. I would love to hear about which era of Paul Weller's career he would be referring to. I'm guessing that the timeline would have been while Paul Weller was heading The Style Council, as The Jam were history by then and The Paul Weller Movement started around '91 or so when I first saw him in concert in London. The music of The Style Council is a much fuller sound than that of The Jam, with Mick Talbot playing Hammond B3 and keys, DC Lee backing vocals, and plenty of horns to more closely resemble Slackers arrangements. I could certainly go for seeing a Style Council cover on the next 'Sessions' type release. Maybe something like'Speak Like A Child','How She Threw It All Away',or 'It Just Came To Pieces In My Hands' with that Slacker touch of course
Cheers,

my guess: THE JAM

whenever i was describing the sound of early slackers material (the nods album) to somebody i always said that it sounds to me like a garage rock band that suddenly wants to be a mix of the specials and the jam.

one of the two times that vic mentions paul weller in the documentary is when he describes what he was told by dave, after dave jonied the band. something like: "stop trying to be terry hall, stop trying to be paul weller, be yourself". that brought a smile to my face.
